Imagine the son of Peggle and a rogue-like dungeon-crawler. That would be Roundguard.
Roundguard is an indie game by Wonderbelly Games, released last year for Apple Arcade, Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4/5, and Xbox One/Series.
In Roundguard, you’re auditioning for an adventure to save the Kingdom. You choose the character to play with and go through the tutorial before the actual challenge starts. Each character has their abilities, Mana and HP.
The level layouts reminded me of Peggle, with the same pointing mechanics as you destroy the marbles. In Roundguard, besides that, you get gold, HP, or many from destroying the different marbles, but that’s not all. You have to defeat the enemies, and they also give you damage when you hit them. The goal is to clear the level while managing your points and skills. As you progress, you collect runes, earn gold to buy new gear and weapons. Another way to get them is by spinning the wheel of fortune.
There are also daily challenges that grand your extra rewards.
Roundguard is a short game, and you can beat it in less than two hours. However, you can play it several times with different characters. Besides, all levels are procedurally generated to provide you with a unique experience every time.
At the end of the day, Roundguard grabs concepts from different genres and delivers a brilliant product. It’s a fun, addictive game even though it’s not as mindless as Peggle. It’s also full of cute characters with a well-knit tinge of humor.
New Update!
The Druid update adds a new playable hero, Sprig, and a new set of skills, items, and quests to master. The update is available for free on Apple Arcade, Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 / 5, and Xbox One / Series X.
The new hero, Sprig, is not your garden variety druid. She’s a tender-shoot fresh from the wilds, and she’s ready to plant grass and take names. She brings with her plenty of forest friends, including butterflies, hummingbirds, and semi-sentient briar vines. Still, her best friends are the sprouts she plants everywhere she goes.
New skills! Sprig can summon vines and birds, teleport between her sprouts, and even transform into a giant, angry tree. Her skills make you think about bounce angles and board possibilities in a whole new way.
New items! Sprig comes loaded with a new set of weapons and armor. Her equipment creates new combo opportunities with her sprouts, changing their flower effects and growing more powerful as her sprouts spread across the board.
New quests! Test your green thumb and prove yourself to the Elder Tree to earn unique trinkets. Each quest comes packed with a freshly-picked peck of plant puns.
And more! New daily & weekly challenges featuring the Druid and six more achievements!
